7 Diets In 7 Weeks – IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros)

Week 6 : IIFYM – If It Fits Your Macros

The “If It Fits Your Macros” (IIFYM) diet (previously known as ‘Flexible Dieting’) has been popular among bodybuilders for decades. It’s widely regarded as an effective way for elite bodybuilders and physique competitors to maintain optimal training levels while shifting up or down bodyweight, depending on what stage of their preparation they are in. The diet’s newfound popularity within mainstream culture continues to grow – there are currently around three million Instagram posts with the hashtag #iifym!
So this week I’m jumping into the world of IIFYM and finding out just how effective and manageable it is.

The Program

“Macro” is a shorthand way of referring to the three macronutrients found in all the foods we eat – carbohydrates, proteins and fats. These macros all contribute a certain percentage to the total number of calories in the foods we eat. The IIFYM diet is a method of calculating which foods to eat by matching their % calories from fat, carbohydrate and protein with your diet goals (to lose, gain or maintain weight).

Since I’m currently a healthy weight I calculated my macro content based on a weight maintenance diet for 7 days.

Pros and Cons

The upsides to this diet were endless, especially coming off the juice diet from the week before. I was able to fit in all of the foods I loved and I never felt as though I was being deprived. I felt great, was training well and maintaining high energy levels all day at work with clients.

The downside to this diet is the amount of ‘paperwork’ it requires. You need to calculate the % of calories from fat, protein and carbohydrates in everything you eat and drink, which gets pretty tedious, pretty quickly! Luckily I’m already used to putting a reasonable amount of thought and planning into my meals so the diet fitted in well with my normal routine.

The Verdict

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys planning your meals in advance then this could be the diet for you.

It can seem challenging at first to calculate your daily macros, weigh all of your food and accurately plan out all of your meals and portion sizes but there are a number of free apps available to help you with this. Plus over time you begin to learn the macro content of the foods you eat regularly, so there’s a lot less calculating involved.

Although there’s a fair amount of number crunching and advanced planning, the diet allows you to indulge in the treat foods you enjoy (in moderation, of course) and can be very effective in helping you achieve your body goals.

This is a diet I would happily recommend to my clients and if you’re interested in learning more or finding out if IIFYM is right for you I encourage you to get in touch!

You could soon be creating your dream summer body and living a healthier, happier life.
